So finally, I get the time to get this bike legal and on the road.. I bought it off someone who clearly saw the problems involved in registering it in SA. The price was right and the bike was not bad. After riding it a little, I was convinced that something was not lekker inside the motor. I stripped it and the only things I was not happy with were the main bearings.. Replaced them and it was better but still not right. Everything checked out within the first 10% of wear.. ie. the motor is like new inside as if it has been around for 3000 kilos. I replaced the clutch basket and unfortunately, the seller was not very knowledgeable and sold me one that was a bit better than mine and not right. So I still have a noise in the motor. As always, he has his money and couldn't care less..
Next... Roadworthy, license etc... In short, it's not going to happen.. The original reg docs of the bike, which are Mexican, are not obtainable. The person who imported the bike had no interest in going the extra mile to get them either. So.. I have no choice, but to do a chassis change and do it that way.
Of coarse, when people realise that you are desperate to do something.. They jack up the price.. So at a dear premium, I purchased a few bits, including a chassis that has been deregistered. Stolen and recovered, with a de reg cert...
Thankfully, I decided to strip the bike before I had all the bits prepared for the reassembly. There are a few differences on the bikes. The most important one, the model with the steel tank, has different mounting points for the tank to the model with the plastic tank.. So cut the bracket off the old chassis and welded it to the new one. The other side, interestingly, was already in place. Since I didn't strip, I don't know what is hung off that bracket on the steel tanked version..
Okay.. Enough K@K praat and lets get on with it.. Strip started 19th May. Pieces by the end of the end of the day. Chassis was taken in for powder coating on the 21st and it was returned on the 30th. Reassembly began the 31st, with bearings and final cleaning taking place first, then assembly of the main buts, till engine in chassis.
This pic taken the day I did a final clean after the engine stripdown... Soon after I bought the bike..
Please remember guys.. This is not a rebuild or custom job.. It is only to change the chassis.. It will clean up later...
