Excellent trip, and excellent report.  :thumleft:

I have a question about the following;

After the short 500 meter ferry trip we were in Maputo, 4pm on a Friday afternoon, in peak traffic. We were stopped by a few military guys with AK’s, alleging that we drove up a one-way, demanding immediate payment of R500. Again Archangel’s negotiation skills got us away, without paying this time.

How often did you get stopped, and any tips for negotiating?  What will they be satisfied with?  R500 is ridiculous.

Been in Mozambique twice, got stopped once both times.

They'll threat to take you to the Police Station or Embassy or whatever or else you can pay the fine upfront. Agree to go with them to the Police Station - this usually spoils their chances of getting bribes and they'll soon loose interest. Be friendly and helpful, but don't give them any documentation (cause they'll keep it). Show them your drivers licence and passport if they ask for it, but dont give it to them.

Other than that, there's not much you can do, but roll with the punches :-\

A whole day.  :eek:

Conditions varied between Super Sandy (50%), gravel (30%) and potholed tar (20%).
