Dear Garmin User
You have been sent this communication as our records show that you have previously registered (on www.garmin.co.za or www.garmap.co.za) a nüvi device with a serial number that IS subject to a Product Safety Recall from Garmin International. By registering your product we are able to communicate directly with you in regard to this important safety issue.

DESCRIPTION
Garmin has decided that a defect which relates to safety exists in certain models of Garmin’s nüvi brand of portable automotive GPS products due to a potential risk of the battery overheating. Garmin has identified potential overheating issues when certain batteries manufactured by the third-party supplier within a limited date code range are used in certain Garmin nüvi models with a specific printed circuit board (PCB) design. It appears that the interaction of these factors can, in rare cases, increase the possibility of overheating, which may lead to a fire hazard.

AFFECTED PRODUCTS
The recalled devices include a small subset of the following nüvi model numbers:

nüvi 200W, 250W and 260W
nüvi 7xx and 7xxT (where xx is a two-digit number)

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED
Confirm your nüvi model and serial number by looking at the label on the back or bottom of your nüvi. You must confirm ownership and provide this and other information on the web site shown below to ensure that your device is logged as part of the Safety Recall process. As previously stated, our records show that this is the case with your registered device.

If your nüvi is confirmed as being RECALLED, kindly follow the instructions & process as indicated on this web site. Failure to carry out this process will result in your device not being registered as part of the Safety Recall process.

If you do not have access to the Web site:
  • In South Africa, call 0861-GARMIN / 0861-427646
  • In Southern Africa, call +27 11 251-9999
  • In the rest of Africa, call +44 870 850 1242

RESOLUTION
If you determine that your nüvi is affected by this recall, you must immediately stop using the device and follow the instructions as provided. The unit will be collected & once the service is concluded, your nüvi will be immediately returned to you. You will not have to pay for any associated service or shipping charges, if the correct procedure is followed.

Do not attempt to remove the battery yourself. Promptly discharge the battery in any recalled nüvi devices to eliminate the possibility of the battery overheating. To safely discharge the battery, perform the following actions in order:
  1. Disconnect the nüvi from all power cables and mounts.
  2. Turn on the nüvi. The top right corner of the nüvi main menu displays the battery symbol and indicates the current battery charge level.
  3. Let the nüvi sit until the battery is completely discharged and the nüvi turns itself off.
  4. Do not re-charge or continue to use a recalled nüvi.

CONCLUSION
This notice is being sent to you to correct the identified problem and provide the superior quality reflected in the Garmin brand products we are privileged to provide.

We also take this opportunity to re-emphasise that Garmin’s existing product literature for nüvi devices instructs and warns customers not to expose the products to extremely high temperatures by leaving nüvi units in the windshield while unattended because of the extremely high temperatures that can be reached on a car dashboard on a hot, sunny day. These high temperatures can cause the battery to swell, which could contribute to overheating risks.

Garmin sincerely apologises for the inconvenience that this matter has caused. We value your business and your faith in our company and want to maintain your confidence in and support of our entire line of products. Even through our handling of this incident, we endeavour to retain and strengthen your trust in the future.

We are awaiting instructions from Garmin International confirming the procedure required to rectify recalled devices. Once we have received these instructions, we will notify you of the procedure subject to your successful completion of the registration process at www.garmin.com/nuvibatterypcbrecall Rest assured, your unit will be rectified free of charge. Furthermore, we will dispatch a courier to both collect and return your device.

We are giving this situation our full and urgent attention and will keep you posted on any updates as soon as we have them to hand.

Regards.
Team Garmin
