This short stretch of road had a top layer of black/grey gravel, unlike the normal sandy colour of the rest of the road.

Rode some nice fast, flat gravel and after a while, found a shady spot next to the road to have some snacks and a drink

The grey stretch of road has a layer of RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Paving) laid on it.
It's the stuff removed when the highway surface is repaired/replaced.

That's interesting!!! I had NO idea they did that. Is it used as an aggregate with bitumen(?) added?

There are different ways of application.
That particular stretch appears to have no binder added, probably just compacted by roller.
Bitumen is widely used but is slowly being replaced by environmentally friendly non petrochem binders.
