After seeing a bloke die on the Highway yesterday because his lid came off, I looked around to find some standard of how helmets
are tested and graded in terms of protection offered.
Here is some interesting reading: https://sharp.direct.gov.uk/
Funny thing is that that in many cases cheap-ass helmets actually get better ratings than the big names of Arai, Shoei, Nolan, Shark and the likes. Why would I pay R8k for a lid if a cheapy for R800 would offer the same protection ? Sure the more expensive helmets probably are nicer, plusher inside with better venting etc.
The chap that died near malingbongwe yesterday was wearing ablack Shark helmet - didn't see the model, but I checked it, the safety clasp actually failed and I saw it coming off right after the guy hit the concrete. If that lid stayed on, he would have had a few broken bones but would probably have made it. I prefer the double D ring system for this reason.
Any thoughts from clever helmet salesmen out there ?
