Help needed to convert 81 xr500r to 12 volt as cheap as possible!

Howzit all u  dogs need info on how to convert my 81 xr 500r to 12 v want to make it road legal well allmost anyway! Hav heard of so many ways but need some opinions from the dogs! Am financially challenged dog so want to do it the pooratech way! pllllleease help!!!
