How can I test my KLR fan?

Coming back from Blazes' fun ride today I noticed my bike was way hotter than it usually gets without the fan coming on, and yet the fan did not come on. I've now put some direct dc on the fan and it does turn.

How do I test if the fan is working correctly?

Riding home the temp would go up to about 3/4, and I'm sure the fan would kick in by this stage on any other day, but today, nada.
