How often do you have to get a new helmet?

So how long before a helmet needs to be replaced?

Obviously if you have a big off, and fall on your head, you need to replace your helmet.

But say you have never fallen on your head, what is the life expectancy of a helmet? Does the foam deteriorate after a few years?

Case in point: My one helmet, an Arai TX is now 12 years old and still in good nick. Can I safely ride with it, or should I toss it away due to safety reasons?
