My first trip to the Eco Challenge. What a blast - good riding, great show of skills of big bikes, great routes, excellent chow and some brilliant riding with mates.

Fitted TKC's all round as a treat to myself, from past fittings I knew I wouldn't get much milage, but was shocked that after 600kms the rear was missing some knobbies, after 1100kms it was dead. Fun was had destroying it though. Thats R1.35 per kilometre on the rear, eish!

Eco recommened for anone with a leweensgevaarlik BMW.

Didn't have time to take too many pics, but did manage to take a few.

Thanks Usurper again for a great trip. Enjoyed the trip back to the group in reverse the most.

Hope everyone made it back safe, good recovery to the fallen at the Eco.

Looks like a good , and fun, event , lekker pics  :thumleft:

I'm just curious why such a good tyre died so quickly ? Did you do power slides around every corner ? >:D  And what was your tyre pressure like?

Great event....orange 3 was excellent...up the mountain and down the hill.

You must have klapped some tar on the way up....hard to kill that takkie!  Mind you i killed a E10 in 3000kms but a lot was on tar..

Usual Pressures, between 2.2 and 2.4

Nope, we klapped some tar 50 kms out of Joburg and on the last 80 kms just before Heidelberg coming back. The rest of the time was gravel.

Our pace was mainly controlled by how much power my Dakkie could put down on full throttle... Throttle on, throttle off... skip everything in between.

My 606 looked a lot better (I know the 650 vs 800 thing, bla bla)

Naa, as Henri said, we did very little tar the whole weekend, I would reckon maybe 5-10% throughout the whole weekend.

Some pickies taken by on of the event photographers.

I'm of the opinion that the TKC is rubbish off road; it has no grip and you are lucky to get 1,500 km out of a rear. My last (and only one) lasted me 1200 km and a good percentage of that was in soft sand where there would have been negligible wear. I run the correct pressures at the correct times.

And of me:

I like the fork conversion on your bike, the standard forks were a bit weak on those bikes. Did you do the shock too?

I wouldn't ride with anything else than a TKC ,have had no issue with it , not even a flat tyre . . I am obviously doing something wrong as I get up to 11,000 on the front and 6,000 to 7,000 on the back  ,and my bike is heavier. :p

And if you think she cannot ride, then try to keep up...  >:D

Negative, I am running a the normal Dakar rear shock, if you really start pushing the bike hard; the shorter rear travel starts kicking it up a bit, but nothing to hectic.

I've ridden with her before, and yes she can ride  :thumleft:

I love the TKC's, gives so much grip off road, but how the hell do you get so much milage. I did intentially abuse the tyre, but you get 500% more milage. But at R1.30/km it does not make sense, the Heidies gave me around 6000km per rear.

When I started pumping my tyres harder , it immediateley made a huge difference . I think on the bigger GS's , ( 800's 1200's ) tyre pressure is crucial because of the extra weight we carry . On smaller bikes it's not so essential . On tar I ride 3 bar at the back  ( 3,2 if loaded ) and 2,8 or 2,9 in the front.  Even off -road I try and keep them at upside of 2 bars, unless I ride soft sand  . I don't tend to inflate / deflate every time I change surfaces ,but certainly for long stretches I do . Its a hassle, but try it , it  makes a noticable difference . I also tend to rely a lot on engine braking and I don't do power slides. But that is not specifially to save tyres , rather just my riding style , I prefer smooth riding to jerky riding.

I only had one Heidi , and it delamintated , then had a flat and then burst so won't use them again, too many potential issues.  Admittedly , rider error might have had something to do with it , but I just don't want to worry about tyres . The TKC's are just so reliable in all conditions . I even commute with them in the wet and have never had issues with loss of grip .
