Is airbox mod a lot of hot air?

I recently bought a 2008 KLR, love it, BUT it had the airbox mod done. To be honest, I'm not convinced it's an improvement. What I score on open-throttle response seems to be negated by irregular idling and a tendency to cut out when taking off, say after waiting at a robot.
Is this normal?
