Race Dog
After our first visit to Namibia we vowed we would return. We left some unfinished business in the Northern part. The initial plan was to do Van Zyls, Epupa falls and the surrounding Kaokaland area.
After one of the brothers and the orphan had to pull out due to unforeseen circumstances; we were down to just 2. Funacide and myself. We decided to skip Van Zyls because with only two riders it would be slightly risky. It is amazing how comfortable you get with the group that you normally ride with and how odd it feels to be minus one member.
With the amount of rain Namibia had the roads to Epupa falls from the east was closed that left only the southerly approach.
Since we'd been going right to the edge of the Angola border Fun said he would love to checkout his old army base. We now had a rough route and two weeks to kill.....
A couple of days before we left Fun had some work crises (read opportunities) and needed to return early, so we had sorted the route a little.
This is the actual route we took
This was also the first major trip on my new 800. So there was a lot of prepping and test packing to be done.
Doing some last minute “mods”
Most of this crap had to be packed
Ready for action….and yes I did leave lots of the crap on the table behind.
Day 1
Distance: 750
Accommodation: Kalahari rest
Cost: P480 for chalet
Day 1 was pretty uneventful. We met at Menlyn service station at around 4:30 and headed to the border via the N4. Very boring and bloody cold!!! Those that read our previous adventure to Namibia will recognise the garage from the start of that trip except we were minus a Big Fat Pig (the 1150 Adventure also known as the fuel bunker) and the third of the Jameson brothers.
Doing 750km in a day is not fun, add to this 5 – 10 degrees, a lot of early morning mist and it makes for not such a pleasant day on a bike.
Some pics on the Trans Kalahari
Our overnight stop was Kalahari rest, same spot we slept before. Awesome place about 25 km after Kang. We decided not to camp because we were lazy!!
We had some nice beers watched Bulls beat the Sharks. The caretaker even let us drink our own Jameson in the bar, very nice and friendly place which is to be recommended to anyone doing the Trans-Kalahari.
