I agree with @Malmoer. Its all about the journey and the friendships formed along the way. I only started riding bike about 2 years ago and also came across the youtube vids and miraculously made my way to top 14 at the finals in Aberdeen.

My takeaway from the journey is that it made me a well rounded and most importantly safer rider at the end of the day.

I'd recommend everyone to go experience the trophy at least once, if not as a competitor go spectate the event as a guest(any motorcycle brand welcome). I'm not sure what the guests had to pay. But they got to experience all the routes and destinations with the competitors.

Participants and guests received the following goodies:
80l Turkana Bag
R1000 BMW Cash card for petrol
Tent
Riding Shirt
2 x T Shirts
Power Bank
Headlamp
Mug
Cant remember the rest. Help @Malmoer
Nice buff
2 free beers every night
Nice food everyday
And a **** load of awesome memories!!

Preparartion in all these events is key.
Balancing your personal, work and GS life will become a challenge of note.

I told my wife that this years GS trophy will be my last comp one way or another. Luckily its my last time for the right reasons.. If you have been part of the SA team you are not allowed to participate again. Its a competition for amateurs and in the that Spirit someone else must get a chance to continue.

So what does preparation for the national event consist of?
Well let me explain my situation.
Being a 48 year old male i am not as fit as a 25 year old male. Getting fit takes more dedication and focussed training. Braam Esterhuizen is a fitness trainer, is in a physically good shape and when we do certain riding challenges for example barrel race than i need to keep up. Its not always easy.

Now i ride everyday on my motorcycle, its my daily. Sold the car as it just frustrates me, so biking fit i will say is checked.
I do not like running so decided on cycling rather. 3 to 4 times a week.
Going to the gym as well with limited time also became a challenge, but i tried. But pushing the big 1200 up and down the drive way and having a big truck tire and rim to do flips and a motorcycle handlebar for pullups in the garage have proven to be sufficient. Yes i know..... i need to step up this year.!!!!
Internationals is a few steps more intense.

Doing a mixture of trials riding and doing Circus tricks is the key and getting enough km behind you to know your bike. Believe me you will pick your bike up enough and that will serve as physical exercises as well.

We also had team exercises which was joined by most of the eastern Cape team as well as they were based in Cape Town.
The old MX track in Malmesbury was nice and central to everyone. I will post pics later.

We also had an official team event once again joined by the eastern Cape guys just to keep costs down. That was held at the Country trax WC facility at Worcester (Klipbokkop) excellent venue, has everything that you need. Rocks, sand, open spaces for circus tricks ect.

The Country trax guys offer their weekend up to help us prepare for the nationals,
Gerrits aim is to hone the cicus tricks and to instill a calmness during the challenges. Listen , look and think. Think before doing the challenge and most important of all think whilst doing the challenge.

To me the last point is the most important, one of the challenges i stuffed up good because that thinking part evaded me during the challnge. I was seriously peed off but you need to clear your head and refocus on the next challenge, dwelling on the mistake will just compound into the next challenge.

I will upload some pics during the day with comments.

Training in mud is excellent for for balance

Wherever i stop and have to wait for someone i will do some skids, look for technical climbs or just trying something stupid.

JP was gemiddeld 5de as ek reg onthou.

Its been a while since my last post, so here goes!!

Goals : Fitness and learning how to ride a bike properly.

Fitness i have mentioned needs to be improved, but at the same time i have to loose about 10kg. For a 48 year old boertjie i am in not the worst shape but it needs to be better. This Trophy is a great way to motivate you to better yourself in that respect.

So fitness consits of running and cycling, never been much of a runner or a cyclist but i am trying. Weight training is limited to wrestling a 240kg in deep sand when you get yourself in trouble in the dunes and you are alone plus a little gym work here and there.

Practicing on the bike:
See above section of the dunes. Mainly riding sand at this stage, its what we have in abundance in the Western Cape.:ROFLMAO:

Exciting news in terms of Sponsors:
We are working with BMW Club of Cape Town with some innitiatives to get funding. Its not much but every bit helps as this "journey" is way more expensive than what i first anticipated.

We also have a big Sponsor. Currently we are doing bike graphics and a few other things and want to launch this collaboration with them in a proper way. So please be patient.

I am also in the process of doing personalised MX shirts which will be a once off for whomever would want one at a good price. This will be finalised next week or even over the weekend.

Time is flying by quickly....

cheers for now

Lets do a cost breakdown:

So first off, not to take away anything from BMW from what i have gathered through various sources the cost for each participant is app R250,000.00 to R330,000.00. That is all traveling, accomodation, kit and costs associated with the international event. That is paid for and not for my account.

But the training is for our account: In some of the previous years bikes were supplied to the participants for training but the new 1300gs will be used for the event and BMW SA does not have enough 1300's to provide the participants a training bike as well.

So this is a breakdown of the costs that we will have preparing for the main event.
5 official practise sessions are scheduled. With 2 of the participants in Guateng and myself in Western Cape, getting together is not that easy.

Our biggest costs is traveling, accomodation, food and fuel for the bikes o yes plus tyres.

We are budgeting for atleast R10k per person per event. We are receiving help from BMW but not much, Country trax is providing the trainers and other sources yet to be named.

All will be revealed in due time, watch this space.

:coffee: sub

Thanks for taking the time to share (y)

I must say both @Kokdjembe and myself have separately done Mikes training at Boulders Academy were we had a chance to try out some of the circus tricks you refer to.

Mike has them laid out for as he offers Trophy prep training as one of the courses.

I found the standard challenges to be kark difficult and I didn't complete one without some penalty.

Respect to those who do.

Circus trick quickly turns into something very boring or very frustrating.

That said its the basis of how to ride a motorcycle properly.

Going through the ranks at Country trax with the intermediate course and so on, one quickly realises that although i can ride a bike, the poor techniques i have learned along the way DOES not make it easier.

Dirt riding skills can be applied to adventure riding but some techniques require tweaking. The is where professional training helps.
