Myself and a couple of mates are planning a trip through Kaokoland towards the end of next year. Since all but one of us are currently living abroad we're thinking of hiring motorcycles for this trip. The KLR or Dakar/F650GS are the ones we'll probably go for, unless we can find some DR400s. My concern is however that the bikes will probably be pretty much standard so I would like to know which bike would be the best option and what sort of extras would be required for the bikes to do the trip. Fitting knobblies is probably not negotiable. Due to "circumstances beyond our control" we're taking a support vehicle, so luggage carrying capability is not an issue.
