Eish. Yet another little gentle ride I planned that ended up way more adventurous than I imagined.

The plan was just for MadDog and I to take a gentle ride out to Ngilanyoni, take a few pics and video, and then an easy ride down the North side of the Mkomazi down to Umkomaas.

But I can’t stick to the proven roads I’ve been on can I? Nope. I decided to include a few detours and shortcuts into the plan, and in those lay the adventure.

Our wanderings.

The first detour took us over the mountain (eGogweni – “Granny’s Place” - on the map A-B)   Parts of the track are not in MapSource, but it looked okay in Google Earth. What Google Earth did not show was the very steep ride up to the top of the mountain, and then an equally steep descent on the other side.  I discovered that my downhill on gravel demons are still not dead, and yesterday was quite a tough battle. At one point the Demons won, and I dropped the bike – thankfully on the low side this time and no bones broke – but it was a reminder to me that I still lack a huge amount of confidence on the gravelly descents. But one positive from yesterday was that MadDog suggested that I try and walk the bike down one slope with the engine off and using the front brake and clutch as brakes. Luckily I have reasonably long and robust legs and the method worked fine on the next and a few other descents.  It’s not pretty, and it’s slow going, but it works!.

You can see the road we came down in this pic – it’s a lot steeper than it looks – trust me.

From the up to Ngilanyoni   (“Bird’s gizzard”) and onto the spur for some pics :-

The fun wasn’t over. On the way back I decided to try a short cut – C-D – and it was a lot more gnarly than it looked in Google Earth.

From there we planned to go back along the road on the North side of the Mkomazi, but when we got to point “E”, and saw this horrible side-sloped ascent ahead of us we chickened out, backtracked and took the taxi roads home.

A great, although for me quite scary ride, and a big thanks to MadDog for coming along and especially for climbing back up half of “Granny’s mountain” to help me lift my bike on a steep slope.

A slightly bruised foot, and extremely stiff legs tell me how much fun it was !!

wow  GG...and that pic of the bike on the Spur...wow wow wow..

Just shout - Happy to show you the place .....

And I need to video the ride again - this time keeping my head more stable, and turning the cam about 15deg up, and with the sun a little higher in the sky.

There's always an excuse izznt there?  ;D

Very true.... we often ride the same routes as you cant get enough of some places....
Unfortunately my next ride will be in May i think due to some work pressure..
Looking forward to it

Its actually a crib of a pic EssBee took at the same spot of me, but this one we took a little time to set up and plan a bit.

I am still determined to get my Subaru Forester up onto that spur. Will need to take a pruning saw - The road to the spur is a bit overgrown in spots.

Hey - here's a plan - I set out early one morning, put the fozzy up there, put out a gazebo, put a roast and a few chickens in the Weber, and then the bikes join for brunch.

Can work ?

Thanks once again GG for a great ride and another unexpected adventure. That was a really great ride and a fantastic opportunity to test out the new suspension.

Test Results: Passed, with flying colours

Those 2 detours turned out to be great even if they were a little challenging. I even got to test my stopping ability on the steep gravel hill where you had your side stand incident ;) I thought I was going to have to drop my bike to prevent myself from hitting you

Its difficult to explain just how steep some of those hills were. I do think we need to go and explore the one we turned away from in more depth. Further investigation in Google Earth has shown the descent on the other side to look much better than we imagined and I reckon its do-able

Ive attached an image of the hill we turned away from and another one that goes a little way to showing the gradient we had to deal with. Next time I'm keen to tackle it but I'll need a new back tyre 1st, that loose stuff doesn't offer much grip on the steep hills.

Thanks again for a great ride, I'm looking forward to the next adventure / newbie ride ;)

What was more worrying about that "chicken hill" was not just the up-slope, but the side-slope.

Perspective can be deceiving. Some that look hard from the bottom end up easy, and vice versa.

Hey dog, hear you had a good trip in the country of masala and bad water.Time you come tell,I am back in office tomorrow. You have to take me on this Umkomaas one, looks greate.

Hey MadDog. I think we should tell rider28's boss that unless he gives the man a little weekend time off to come ride with us, we will not go shop at his shop.

The loss of your farkle patronage will be a devastating blow to him  ;D

I am surprised none of the KZNers picked up on this offer:

This better ?

How about I join you with the Fortuner, should suffice as a backup / tow vehicle if needed :) The misses being a butcher I'm sure I can contribute a little red meat for the Weber too....

Yup - I like !

A possible plan for the next newbie/social ride ? - Do you think anything about the ride there (if we skip Granny's Huill or that river crossing - would frighten a newbie ?

And any Swambo's or SSE's could come in the Fozzy/Fortuner to join on the hill.

I think for a big pack and 4x4s we had better get permission from the headman of the area. But I have met him - he is a good guy!

Should be an easy ride for Newbies without the 2 mentioned obstacles. its just worth noting that the last section onto the mountain may prove challenging if the grass is still long as the ruts on the tweespoor weren't visible and could catch some people out. We may also have to find a way around the power pole with the stay line that threatens our heads as the 4x4's won't fit through that little gap.

Chat to the chief, maybe we can arrange a little parcel for him if he gets the grass trimmed / burned.

Oh, and lets hope it doesn't rain a few days before, I remember from our 1st trip up there that the mud on the tweespoor was quite snotty and tricky for the more road oriented tyres.

Looks like an interesting ride you two had. Well done guys.
Lovely pic of you out on the spur Maddog.
