I wanted to do this for a while. Just few questions:

- @DJfloyd: you did the Penge pass at the beginning of day 1 - right (you are a big clandestine there)?
- @anybody: if one wants to ride day 2 with the similar level of technicality as day 1 in this report, would Bewaarskloof be the right place to look for that? And if not - is there anything similar around?

Not really in the same area but i think a trip down the groot letaba in the river bed can be very technical (between Giyani and Phalaborwa)

I think I am going to approach the authorities for Room to Manoeuvre and head up that way in about 6 weeks or so - maybe early October - Any idea what weather conditions are like around then? I will have to take the GSA Lump, but maybe add some soft luggage instead of the 'loominum panniers..... And hit some B&B's rather than camp....

To answer some Q's:

We did Penge at pretty much mid day. It was technically not the first technical pass we did but was certainly the most difficult up and down on day 1.
Within Lekgalameetse you already have some technical climbs. Hope that makes it clear.
There is another route just to the west of the Penge route we did that I believe is also as technical for your 2nd day requirements. Neither pass will keep
you busy all day though. The actual Bewaarskloof can be entered from North or South. The 4x4 trail comes in from the south. It does not go all the way through.
The trail turns into a rock strewn riverbed where plastic bikes had to be carried over rocks. Sidetrack has a great ride report showing that I think. We wanted to go in
from the south to that point because already you are deep in the kloof, then turn back and go out the same way. Carrying on north is possible but I suspect it is
serious work (for plastics never mind bigger bikes).

I did not do Bewaarkloof but from what I saw it was hectic stuff almost like an extreme enduro, I would not even classify it as terrain for dual sport bikes. Maybe nice place to go and play with your 300 2 stroke. I like technical stuff but that seemed like one level too far. Penge is great fun just technicial enough to be a ice challenge, Lekgalmeetse is a Sunday stroll imho. On a side note I'm pretty sure Penge is on private land so one should respect the area and ride with caution. No gates or signs but like most rural areas they are not too bothered to fence places in.

I could not agree more - always ride with respect. At any time you may be on someones land and if you're
treating the jeep tracks as your private race course you only upset the owners and ruin it for everyone else.

I have done that route with a bicycle in a race called the Magoebaskloof Cycle Race.  Donners taai.
