so spent the day saturday modifying my GS, just a few things that i have been wanting to do for many years since the gs 1200 was launched, i love the big BM's, had 3 anniversary edition 1100's had the 1150 adventure, had the HP1200, and this is my second GS 1200. i love the torque and the ease of servicing the air cooled bikes.
so this weekend i fitted a decatted pipe to my bike, then i modified a stock tail pipe so its a free flow and then i fitted a 21 inch wheel, the k&n filter had not yet arrived so filter was left sock.
took me he whole of saturday and was looking forward to my sunday morning test run out to klipriver and walkerville south of jhb.
bright and early i was out on the bike , sound of that pipe is amazing, wish i could get it as a ring tone, pulled out the driveway and WTF, acceleration was violent, at first i thought it must just be the sound from the pipe , but no the accelertion and /or throttle action had become more aggresive in response, how could that be ???
i shrugged it off and got onto the deserted section of tar road, opened the throttle and warning lights came on, i felt the traction control kicking in, ?? is it because the bike has a 21 inch front wheel and the computer is having a brain freeze trying to match the wheel speeds ????
i switched the abs and traction control off as i very seldom ride with them on and never ever ride on the dirt with them on.
warning lights never came on again but hell the bike is running very lean, bike didnt like reving past 5500rpm, it did it but i could feel it wasnt happy so kept offroad and tested the 21 inch front wheel.
well, .......nothing, hardly felt any difference at all, in and out of donga's, over ruts and in ruts, small jumps, trying to drift and all the other things i shouldnt be doing but do, to be honest i couldnt tell the difference between the 19 and 21 inch wheel, i was so dissapointed, not really sure what i thought was going to happen but the usual spots i rode felt the same and there were no big sections of loose sand to try out so i coudnt test the theory thats its better in sand .
so basically unless i now get the bike tuned and the fueling corrected i have gone backwards, the saying 'be carefull what you wish for ' springs to mind.
worth mentioning that the whole set up didnt cost too much as i had a 21 inch tyre, tube, front discs and abs ring, also had a spare exhaust so my stock set up is still safe and sound. i did have to buy the 21 inch woodys wheel but got it at a good price and had just sold a classic honda ,so that took the sting out of that deal. so not feeling too bad.
