If you have a 1987 to 2007 (old model) KLR then this is not a problem any more.
Most people realize quickly that the KL650A OEM rear shock is only good for solo riders with a standard size & bulk frame and the preload adjuster only copes to keep things in shape if you add a few kgs of luggage.
A loaded KLR or one carrying a passenger comes down the road like a dog with worms. Full scrumhalf size riders or those who like to play rough and dirty bottom out the OEM shock which will eventually lead to its destruction and a costly repair.
You can go from OEM (bottom of first pic with black spring) to reinforced and modified (top with silver spring) and you won't have the cheapo OEM piston ring (second pic) destroying your damper.
