It’s been both entertaining and frustrating to have the XR parked in my cave. Making the parts list was easy but sourcing those parts is proving more difficult. This will not be a rebuild/restore, the bike is almost spotless, it’s more of a transformation into a bike I’ll never sell. Or to be honest, couldn’t sell given what I’ll be spending.

First task is to breathe some life into the engine. I’ve checked the basics and all looks OK. Runs well, oil clean, filter good with no leakage, plug new etc. But...it’s not terribly exiting and with the stock exhaust, sounds even worse. This weekend I aim to open up the airbox, replace the filter, remove the baffle and fit the de-smog kit. Ad soon as the parts arrive, I’ll fit the FMF pipe and look into opening the carb to do ‘Dave’s mod’. The latter will only work with the FMF fitted and I still need to work out the correct jetting for the elevation.

Second task is to add range by fitting a long range tank. While doing that some cosmetics are on the list, remove/replace the tail light license plate assembly. I have the new light but need to still make a suitable mount for the plate. I don’t like the look of it mounted flat on the rear fender. Will also replace the front fender with more aggressive looking aftermarket version in white and fit a polycarbonate sump guard.

This last action leads to more cosmetics. I like being different and I don’t like so much red, especially when it’s different shades. My plan is to go all white on the plastics and replace the seat cover with black. I’m also waiting on a set of pro taper bars and when that arrives I’ll replace the handguards with an aftermarket set.

Then the touring bits needs adding. Plan is to remove the tool pouch and fit a proper rear rack and larger tail pack for tools etc. Wider lowered foot pegs for comfort. A set of low current but bright LED spots will be fitted and lastly, luggage/pannier frames prepared for fuel pods but this can wait. For now I’ll be exploring around Hartie, mostly day trips and fuel around every corner.

So after numerous calls and e-mails I’ve sourced most of the items on my list. If all goes well my garage will be filled with parts by next weekend :deal:

Thank you [mention]Hardy de Kock[/mention], [mention]Runner[/mention] and [mention]Jaka[/mention] for sharing your XR wisdom, I’m learning a lot while planning and sourcing, will know a lot more once I complete the project :thumleft:

Yesterday I gave it a quick wash and went for a short ride. The XR performed admirably and after I’ve made a few changes it will be even better. I did notice a few bolts that needs tightening which I’ll do over the weekend. I also noted the front wheel pressure is lower than it should be and added some air, will see by the weekend if this is related to a slow puncture. If that’s the case I’ll add heavy duty tubes to the list and change them instead of just fixing the leak.

Focus today is on sourcing handlebars, the one item that still eludes me. Again this is because I’m full of **** and won’t compromise. Looking for ProTaper CR High in platinum, not silver or black.

Quick Friday rant...need to get it off my chest.

I’ve been looking for a very specific model and finish handlebar. Suppliers indicated new stock is about two months away from arriving with no guarantees. With that knowledge I start phoning shops asking if they might have one on the shelve.

One helpful sales person suggests I try shop ABC in Centurion. I call and enquire about make, model, finish. They have make and model but not finish, they also have make and finish but different model. I’m thinking given they have those, I’ll go and compare, it might just work. But I don’t want to travel all the way to Centurion so I also enquire about bar risers specifying make & model. After a short delay to check I receive confirmation that they have and I decide it’s worth the journey.

As I leave Harties I can see a storm is brewing but I’m happy given I can make a little progress tomorrow with these two hard to find items. Arriving at ABC it’s pouring and I get soaked but still not fussed.

I ask for the person I spoke to and we head off to the handlebar section. They have make but not the model or finish and I’m more than a little pissed. After I expressed my dissatisfaction and receiving a sheepish apology I decide to take the risers and retreat. They don’t have the make or model, nor do they have anything that compares. At this point I’m fuming!

I just drove 90 minutes through traffic - because when it rains every second driver slows to 20km/h and switch their hazards on - and now I have to negotiate Friday afternoon peak traffic in a storm and I’m leaving empty handed.

However, I called another shop earlier, a bit further north, and according to the shop assistant they have a set of risers. I decide given I’m three quarters there I’ll go support them. But now I’m skeptical so before I leave I call and ask to speak to the owner. I explain what I want only to be told they don’t have stock of that item.

FFS! Why bother calling ahead with specific details if the person on the other side clearly doesn’t listen or understand the request!!

PS: On a positive note, all the other bits including the ones I didn’t find today, will be shipped from Flying Brick next week.

On your marks...

While I wait for the orders to arrive I’ll spend the week mostly stripping and cleaning. I’ve noticed a few scuff marks so I may apply a few touch ups. I’ll also do the carb mod, remove the air box snorkel, fit new filter, remove the smog pump and while I’m getting oil on my manicure, also change the oil.

Where did you source the plastics for your new lady, mine are looking tired and no amount of polishing will bring them back to life
