Packing cameras and lenses

Relative new to off road touring. How and where are the best places to pack your camera and lenses?  A compact is easy, but the bigger stuff?

On my road bike a top box was fine, but now there are much more vibration in the topbox.  I was thinking of a tankbag, not so sure it is safe there?
