Rear shock setting : How important is it?

i found that most of the guys set the rear air shock up way to hard and the bike doesnt get the traction it should.

I saw this post of Sillystunt on another thread and it triggered my curiosity....

What effect, or impact would the setting of the rear shock have on the traction and roadholding of a bike , specifically on dirt ?

Does this setting really play such a major role in the performance and/or traction ?

Please enlight me..........  (as I'm not knowledgeable on this at all : )
