I've had my Sertao since middle Feb now and since my first ride I've noticed the speedo needle doing 'funny' things. It is sometimes not that noticeable but around a certain speed range (60 - 90) the needle vibrates at a high frequency. Let's say you peg the speed at 85 the needle would vibrate between 84 and 86-ish.(Sometimes more) When you slow down or speed up you can clearly see the needle stop doing it. Needles to say it annoys the crap out of me. And yes, maybe I'm being pedantic, but in my mind if you buy a new bike (and pay almost R90k) you have the right to ensure all is well.
I've mentioned this to the salesman before the bike even had 20 km om the clock and they took it for a test ride. (Clearwater BMW) They couldn't see anything.... Manny (Service Manager) told me that if it still does it by the 1000 km service, they'll replace the speedo cluster. Of course with it being mechanical and not having any self-healing abilities - that I know of - it kept doing what it did and the cluster got replaced at the 1k service. (Later on Manny told me that they noticed the first cluster's needle vibrating. It was good to know they picked it up as I was starting to get funny looks from my wife...
I went on holiday a few weeks back and left the bike with Clearwater. Manny took the bike for a ride and didn't notice the vibration, but he did notice that the needle would 'fluctuate' while the rpm stayed the same. He took the bike to BMW SA in Midrand for the techies to have a look at my 'funny' complaint. They couldn't find anything wrong.
Back from my holidays I jumped on and sure enough, the vibration is still there. I did notice though that it is a lot more noticeable when you accelerate aggressively. If you nurse the bike up to speed the needle behaves.
So, long story, but I wanted to find out from other owners if they have any experiences like this? I am very happy with the bike, don't get me wrong, but I need to put this matter to rest. I need to know if I was just unlucky and got a 'Monday morning' bike, or if the Sertao just has a crap speedo cluster and you have to put up with it. I am not sure why the range of BMs have such different speedos. They should have made it the same as the F800, analogue RPM with digital speed. This things RPM is pretty much useless in bright sunlight....
Anyway, some feedback would be nice.
Cheers
