So I lost the engine of my enduro jobbie a couple of weeks ago during the Redelinghuys sand and mud fest. Bike is a 2009 KTM 250 SX-F 4T. Started to lose power and become hard to restart about 1/2 way through the 1st lap. To be fair, it was a stern test for a 250 with a full-size adult on board.
Anyway, initially I thought that I've dropped an exhaust valve. Finally got to do a leak down today. 80% leak down. No leakage through the valves, nothing through the oil filler cap and no bubbles in the radiator. Lots of air escaping into the tappet cover.
I'll only get time to pull the head over the weekend. So, in the mean time, side bets. What did I loose? Holed piston, rings, valve stem seal? Something else? Bragging rights are all that's available, though, as I'll have to repair the bloody thing...
