THE IDEA OF A WEEK AGO:
I have a decent 21" D.I.D. rim that I want to fit on my Dakar. The rim is from a XR500R and looks in good condition. I messed up my front OEM rim a bit - a few flatspots. Would it be a good "repair" or should I rather get me an Excel rim (if I have the moolas) for a proper fix?
GOT THIS FIGURED OUT BY NOW: 13 May
The BEHR rim is repairable but who wants it? They are plainweg kak... slapkak!
Any standard rim that's pre drilled to fit an offroad bike's hub, other than a F650's, will be a hell of a strugle to fit and furthermore, the spokes will probably not sit straight, but be slightly curved due to the spoke pitch angle that does not match that of the hub.
One can buy an Excel rim (only the rim) specially drilled to perfectly fit the F650's hub, from dear Ray (Cytech: (011) 4338850) for the very reasonable price of only R5950-something. Which, I do not intend to do, for I'm a cheap-ass BMW rider that will rather by XR500RE spares than a damn rim...;D
So, finding a non F650 hub and lace it with an Excel rim is sort of an affordable option or finding a complete wheel, of some KTM (bigger than 600cc bore) with an Excel rim and single 300mm brake disk.
SORTED: I ORDERED A SMPRO RIM THAT FITS THE UNORTHODOX LACING PATTERN OF THE F650GS HUB
