So my mate [member=10837]YoungGSer[/member] bought a SPOT GEN 3 a few months back, to keep the family up to date on his movements etc. - He is on a solo trip currently, Namibia, Zambia, Malawi, Moz, Zimbabwe, back to SA.
I was listed as the emergency response, but I dont get any other updates - this could be a set-up issue, but even that is mostly acceptable, assuming it works.....
The unit sends "spots" every hour or so - even though it was set to update every 5 minutes - emails to the suppliers have left me somewhat disappointed in their service. They say hat you have to do a firmware update every time you change a time-setting - and this has to be done in a wifi area - am I wrong thinking this is unacceptable??
And then it just stops for a whole day - even though we know it's switched on (girlfriend gets a "departing" message and a "arrived" message) - he advised it is on & functioning when he called on a Sat-Phone
The local agents promise feedback in 24 hours - I find this pretty poor, considering this is an emergency facility, and then the 24-hours is theoretical - its actually between 3 & 4 days.......
I am pretty irritated with the whole SPOT company and concept - I have ZERO faith in their ability to assist in an emergency....
SO - persuade me I am wrong - or what other decent alternatives are available.....
Fire away!
