Storing gear in between trips

Camping trips on the bike is usually only done twice per year for me lately  :-\ Question is I have heard alot of talk about how you should not keep your gear rolled up in their bags while in storage. I'm referring to :

Tent
Sleeping bag
Inflatable mattress

What is your take on this ?
