To add and follow on Ama Ride Ride's opinion......
Friday I took my construction team on a year end excursion to the top of table mountain.
Now most, if not all my work is based in Stellenbosch, so I never have to deal with the Bellville - Cape Town rush hour traffic that our national road dishes out every morning, except of course on Friday morning.
Besides the general nervousness around lane changing, missing off ramps and all other shit a person has to deal with in rush hour traffic, there are also some serious dumb Fu&%&ks on bikes too.
The biking community is so quick to criticize car drivers (even stupidly nicknaming cars things like cages etc) and thinking that there is supposed to be some sort of special respect/treatment for the freedom us bike riders embrace.
The fact is that the average if not more car drivers don't ride bikes, don't care for bikes and or couldn't give a shit surrounding a bikers safety that's equally fueled by the way bikes came filtering though traffic.
I personally know that by riding a motorcycle it makes me a more vigilant car driver , because on a bike you constantly have to think for the other road users I kinda carry it over to when I drive my car.
Having said that I witnessed the following three incidents within one day that for me driving a car could have easily without seeing where they came from crashed into any of them.
A guy on some seriously un-roadworthy 200cc scrambler charging through traffic, the blaring superbike which you only see/hear when he's passing you (So much for other stupid 'Loud Pipes Saves Lives' argument), the to bloody slow scooter (isn't there a legal size cc for riding on national roads??) and the other day some ass wipe on a Vuka with a 5-8 year old pillion filtering through traffic while turning in a intersection. FFS!!!
Bikers should get off on their high horses and look at the way they ride. Instead of sticking a 'Think Bike' sticker on your bike aimed at the motorist that doesn't give a shit, rather put a sticker over your clocks constantly reminding you to 'Think Car'!
If the evolutionary law of accidents can be summed up to : Truck vs Bike = Bike lose / Car vs Bike = Bike lose / Bike vs anything else (wall/ pedestrian/ animal/ potholes etc) = Bike still lose.
..........then needless to say it's a dangerous sport/hobby/commute and pastime , so take responsibility and stop bitching about those that don't ride.........because most don't care!
Think Bike , Think Car,Think of yourself , Think about your loved ones ............where ever you ride, whatever you ride ......................JUST THINK.!
