Some advice if you want it.

I have often read threads where sand/mud/kac road conditions causes some falls.

I want to suggest new riders on DS bikes, to do some mountain bike training while learning the ropes.

With any off-road riding, you need to be able to read the road conditions. The faster you want to ride, the faster you have to process your surroundings and choose your line and speed.

Your 'line' is the path you will take on the road your on. The worse the road, the more you need to compute. Sometimes its neccassary to stop, and check your line, and not just barge ahead, leaving all to fate.

Training with a mountainbike will learn you lots. Here are some samples.

1) Steap inclines: You will learn how to control your real wheel. To much power, and you'll cause the rear to loose tracktion. To little power and you'll have to little momentum to carry you over a obstacle.
2) Down hills: You will learn to read you path (line). Going sideways into a rut, will cause you to instantly see your gat. You need to be able to choose the best tracktion for your front wheel, as any slip there will cause a definite fall.
3) Standing and riding: You will learn to ride standing up, and using your feet and legs to control the bike.
4) Sand and mud: In sand you want to keep your weight to the rear, keeping your handlebars steady and straight. In mud you want to keep your traction on your rear wheel constant. You do'nt want to go too fast, as hitting a sizable object under water will cause you to fall rather than go over it.
5) Falling with a bicycle is often less expensive than with a 100k bike.

Anyway, you'll have fun and get fit in the process, which will make you a better rider.  ;D
