Valve timing

So, a while ago I replaced the timing chain on my Dakar myself. I whipped everything out, put it back together and NO START !! This way, that way, everything looked right but NO GO. Turned out I had the timing out by 180 degrees. Sorted that and a couple of thousand kilos later still strong. My question is, is there a way to check it before one puts it back together ?
