So, after my last project, which was a lethal 1982 KTM 495, I thought I'd restor something rideable. I needed something with manageable power, proper brakes and decent suspension - Oh, and green. Green is very important - I can get spares easier and it's good for the enviroment apparently.
A mate of mine gave me the KDX for free!! And so I figured a build spend of about R5k to get me a 'new' VMXer. The KTM was sold to placate the missus when I last broke my leg. I couldn't race that thing anyway, way too mental for me.
Anyways, turns out (as usual) R5k is way off the mark, this bike is/was well and truly fooked. Every item, including bits in the gear box needed work and it has taken me forever to get where I am. Hopefully it runs once I try and start it.
I didn't take pics of the various bits coz it was too heartbraking seeing the damage. But, on a positive side, it came with brand new chain, sprockets, wheel bearings, piston, rings and still has the honing marks from a rebore. I fugure the previous owner spent some bucks to get it going but it never quite worked out.
And so it begins ..................
Frame blasted and painted, forks redone with new seals and oil. I had to scoop the old whatever out with a long stick, was hard like cheese
A bit of a jump but there was so much swearing going while working on that motor, I thought it best just to ban myself. The front rim is there just to balance the bike and the rest is just placed in position - it's good for my head, just doing that.
And how it is now - all parts are fitted where they should be. The back wheel keeps staring at me in the garage waiting to be stripped but the thought of polishing spokes makes me want to vomit.
Just a couple spares that I'm scrounging around for and I can hopefully get it started. I have my doubts about the spark, the carb, the reeds, the flywheel and and and ..................
