Wanna be biker

I have no bike experience what so ever. At the age of 58, I have now the desire to buy one. I fancy the BMW GS dual purpose bikes. 80% of the time the bike will be used for city drives, and the odd 20% for weekend runs on the less traveled roads - dirt roads included.
Now I see there is the F650GS and the F800GS. What is the difference between the two? What bike would you experienced guys recommend for a new biker like myself to begin with?
