What causes a valve on a R1200 GS to break?

Does any one know why or how a valve will break and totally @*$"# a 1200 engine? This happened to me two weeks ago while travelling at 120 - 130 km/h. Is this a common occurence?The left piston broke into small pieces, the con rod was bent and twisted. These broken off pieces also damaged the right hand cylinder.
