What is the best way to deal with stripped threads

This is a problem that all older bikes will endure sooner or later- the problem is caused by steel plugs or nuts screwing into aluminium casings such as sump plugs or swingarm pivots.
Question is , are there alternatives  to Helicoils which do not seem to be a permanent solution ?
