It seems rhat the reason for most of the problems is in the wiring, starting wirh the small harness coming from the switch. Due to vibration the one main wire got worn and didn't give current, as wll as the isolation chafed through, causing a short, causing others wires in the big harness to burn too, now "connecting" things that shouldn't be connected.
I'm going to replace the big harness now. Biggish job.
