Wiring up a Nuvi

Since i am a cheap skate and wont pay for Nuvi power cable, would it be safe to connect a lighter plug to my aux power supply and stick the car charger in it and tape it up and hide it behind the light and use this to charge my Nuvi 500? What is the avarge battery life anyway?
