Ok, this is my opinion, based on facts (from BMW www) and personal opinions.

The 1150GSA
Suspension travel front/rear = 210/220
Kw = 62,5 @ 6750r/m
Nm = 98 @ 5250r/m
Fuel tank = 30l
Weight (wet: full tank, oil, etc) = 253kg
Weight (dry) = 232kg
Max permitted total weight = 470kg

1200GS
Suspension travel front/rear = 190/200
Kw = 74 @ 7000r/m
Nm = 115 @ 5500r/m
Fuel tank = 20l
Weight (wet: full tank, oil, etc) = not published
Weight (dry) = 199kg
max permitted total weight = 425kg

1200GSA
Suspension travel front/rear = 210/220
Kw = 74 @ 7000r/m
Nm = 115 @ 5500r/m
Fuel tank = 33l
Weight (wet: full tank, oil, etc) = 256kg
Weight (dry) = 223kg
max permitted total weight = 435kg

The 1150GSA gives me the impression of a over weight off-road bike, solid build with carrying capacity. It is old technology, vibrates more than the 12's, but has a reputation of indestructible.

The 1200GS (I ride one, remember!) is a good all-rounder, not that good off-road due to lack of ground clearance/suspension travel, but with small adjustments in your riding style, you can overcome this short coming. Thicker forks (40mm) vs the 32mm on the 1150GSA. Is bigger diameter better? I feel that the suspension tends to be harsh, not soft as the 1150GSA. Lack of weight makes it easier to handle in dirt and when riding slow stuff, but lack low 1st gear found on the 1150GSA.

The 1200GSA looks like a proper dirt tourer. It is heavy (almost as heavy as the old 1150GSA), but with more plastic bits that can break off when you have a tumble. Better suspension travel and ground clearance than the 1200GS, but same as the old 1150GSA (remember the diameter of the forks...)

My conclusion:
If you want to do serious off-road touring, with a bike that has a reputation of unbreakable, then the 1150GSA would be better. For shorter trips, where fuel range is no problem, the 1200GS would be better. The 1200GSA offers more ground clearance, but is heavier. More weight will suppress the suspension, thus neutralising the extra 20mm to some effect.

Please note the disclaimer if you disagree. :wink:
