1200 GSA Tank gauge

Hi
I have noticed my tank level goes very quickly from half to empty and sometimes the tank low warning comes on while there is still plenty of fuel.
My BMW dealer tells my it is a common problem on the 1200GS and they can repair by cleaning and calibrating the tank strip? ??? Anyone else had this problem?
