Once proud 950 beast…
The first ride I ever went on it, brand new out the box...
and now, 100k km later
In 2012, I rebuilt it and swore I’d never do that again as for the cost of doing it, I could have bought a brand new 990. I replaced everything that was broken or worn. I did however get a very unique and quite potent bike out of it… A racing pumper carb’d 990 Super Duke engine with adventure gearbox’d 950 rally beast.

Since then, it did 3 Amageza’s, in all about 10k km of pretty serious riding, whilst giving much newer and lighter stuff a good fright…
and not once giving a moments trouble besides being very thirsty and running out of fuel once 5k’s from the end of a stage needing to use my camelback to beg petrol from others.
Anyway, it also doubled as a great touring and play bike. Overall, it had about another 45k km’s added onto it and just as it was rolling over the 100k km mark, I noticed the smell of coolant out the rear cylinder… Ahhhhh **** no!
This was either a headgasket or worse a cracked cylinder. And so there it sat looking a bit sorry for itself. I’ve not ridden it since Feb 2018. In late 2019 I stripped it down to the crank and found the issue and though it was just a leaking rear cylinder head gasket, the rough and tumble times had taken their toll. It had done its job well.
It was now a box bike, something that often ends up being spread around for parts. A sad ending to a very dependable and lovely bike.
