This Ozzie (watch the vid below) nails it (again, he often does)!
The original trendsetter was (I think) the BMW GS boxer, and we all know this behemoth has kept on growing ever since it was released.
Ditto other bikes, the 790 (now an 890!) a good (is it?) example.

But, these are adventure bikes?
Well, in the case of the 7/890 it says so on the stickers..... but are they?

KTM's 390 is one, if equipped with spoked wheels that is - light, nimble-enough, ditto power, same like for instance a DRZ400.
Weight is the differentiator here, and with that the nomer - Adv Bike & Adv Tourer!

Yeah, sure, there's crossovers here, the 690 maybe, not too heavy and more than capable to slog it over long distances (of slab even if needed).
The KTM500 in my opinion (sure, 'course you may differ) rules the roost of the Adv Bikes (it weighs what, 105 kgs?) whilst it will do 150+ but isn't too comfy doing this...
The loved/hated 1250GSA rules the Adv Tourer roost, still, in fact it started this segment (Long Way Down/East/West/Up etc)...
... and inbetween only a few 'crossovers' exist.
Ah, we're talking about the bike with an average rider on it, not a rare specimen of rider who'll make a Mammoth look like a plastic - or the inverse, also possible.

Will be interesting to see what you's think, and who consequentially mis-names his bike ....  :p
