Very Nice Report

Just one minor point - The dam wall you show is that of the Sand Rivier Dam. You passed the Bulk rivier Dam just after the Tar became gravel. The road makes a turn to the right in a small valley with a house on the Left hand side of the road. the Bulk river dam is situated on your left up that valley. It is not easy to spot.

Fixed, thanks!  :thumleft:

Cool report! Congrats on the (another) XR, I did a similar trip about 7 months ago when I fetched my '98 XR600R from Middelburg. Can't imagine a better way to bond with a bike.

nice one tony!
i saw that bike on gumtree... glad you snapped her up!!  :thumleft:
whats happening with your other bike now?

Thanks, I'm glad I snapped her up too!  ;D
There's still some things I need to do to get her in tip-top condition. Hopefully it won't be too long.
I'm gonna let my dad use the other one for a bit, then sell her.

When you gonna set off overseas?

Thanks for posting

Where exactly is this place (pic) you stayed at

Hey Kevin, I've attached the gps file you asked for. I look forward to your ride report!

Nice one DirtHound!!!  :thumleft:

I bought the original XR tank from Dawie (same bloke who you bought your bike from). He should be bringing it up to Jhb tomorrow. I bought it for my XR600R (98). Posted some pics of it here (Reply # 372): https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=66478.360

Some of the things you said in your report interest me:

The sprocket that appears to move towards the foot rest under acceleration; Mine is doing exactly the same but my chain and sprockets are completely buggered. My chain has a lot of wear and flex laterally. Incidentally, I replaced rear wheel bearings (but not seals) less than 300km ago and they are buggered again. I think this time I will do them with the seals. Also one of the bearings was not an SKF bearing (some no name brand) so I suspect that is the culprit.

I am also interested to know what your fuel consumption was. My bike is pathetic (7.55km/100km). I do know there is something wrong with my carb though.

And lastly, what have you figured out r.e. charging your GPS. The stator doesn't push out much juice.

Firstly, nice bike, Blauth! But why did you get a stock 10 litre tank if you already have the nice big Acerbis?
I assume you mean 7.55 litres/100km? I got just about 18 or 19 km/litre for the trip (didn't work it out exactly). I've got an FCR Keihin in my crosshairs for one day when I have the bucks.
As far as the GPS power goes, well... I've mangled one of our PC boards (we manufacture remote GPRS routers at work), and taken the power supply part of the PC board to allow me to input 10V - 30V DC, regulated to a nice clean 5V supply. I haven't looked for DC on the bike though, but I think the hooter & the indicators run on DC, don't they?

I purchased the tank because my original one is cracked and if I upgrade to a new XR650L, I will want to keep the larger tank and all my accessories.

"7.55 litres/100km" Yup, that's what I meant which means there is something seriously wrong with fuel consumption on my bike.

I don't know squat about electrics on a bike, hence the question. I also want to do something along these lines. I will measure the voltage to the tail light with a multimeter and let you know if it's AC/DC and how many volts. My concern is that it would need to be regulated (else whatever you are charging may get fried due to a spike in voltage) and I am not sure of the consequences of putting more load on the system. What will happen if I start drawing more watts than the stator can provide. Will voltage drop and then headlight will get too dim (meaning it will dissapear all together because it's pretty KAK already)

Note: I upgraded my tail light to an LED unit which draws a lot less current and doesn't blow every time you go over rough terrain.

I see an upgraded stator (200W) from XR's only is in the region of $159. Not too bad if I keep the bike for a long time.

Die Suid-Kaap paaie is maar die beste vir sulke trips. Mooi pics en lekker lees trip report.  :thumleft:

Nice XR daai! en dit lyk of jy die trippie ook geniet het. Sal like om so tank vir my XL600 te kan kry.

On cell so I can't see pics, sounds like an awesome trip. Congrats on the 600 DH, awesome bikes.
Touch base with Runner and/or Beserker, Beserker did some mod to charge his gps, Topbox also had some voodoo thing with his gps. Regarding the stator, check the "pig pen" for faq and step-by-step guide to rewinding a XR stator, amount of turns and pics etc. I'm sure a "Armature Winder" (spelling???) can help for less than the cost of a new stator.
911 off.

LRFan, it's really an awesome tank. It's nice and comfy by the knees - I don't even notice the difference between this one and the standard 10 litre one.

Nothing like a morning chill to set off a ride (at least you can blame that for the shiver that goes down the spine when rolling away)

BTW...check this on powering up a GPS..they take a small amount of current, so it is no issue. (Courtesy: Runner)

Nice XR, DH. Dis nou wat ek goeie leesstof noem. Ek het die RR baie geniet.

Ek het 'n pêl in Gauteng gehad met 'n XR. Man ons het jare se pret gehad.  :thumleft:

Nice ride...lol  And good report!
I miss her already! I have fond memories! No hardcore regrets but appreciate a mean reliable machine.  Besides for the problems, I hope you enjoy her!

BTW, Eleanor has seen Padlangs plenty of times! her fav breakfast spot too!
