Ballistic Jersey vs Chest Protector

After a recent off I realised that padded adventure jackets are not the best at handling impact. So now I am planning on getting a proper set of body armor that I can wear under a jersey or under the jacket(padding removed) depending on temperature.
My question would be which setup should I go for? I'm guessing a ballistic jersey would be more convenient. Would a solid chest protector work better though? What say the guys in the know?
