I attended a work conference the past weekend in the Drakensberg and made the obvious choice to travel down with the bike. Friday turned out to be anything except what I had planned..
The road past the Sterkfonteindam turned out be a challenge. It was raining and the side winds were terrible. At some stage it felt as if the wind is going to blow the bike from underneath me The wind also pushed water onto the inside of the visor, causing visibility problems. The raindrops on the outside of the visor moved from right to left due to the wind and those on the inside just stayed there
I went into the Oliviershoekpass, took it very careful due to the rain and wind and just before I exited the pass I hit a mother of a pothole Due to the wind and visibility I did not see the pothole in time to go around it, and the spray from the truck that came from the front did not help either. There was only one way and that was straight ahead throught he pothole!!
The front tyre went flat within 20 meters as the rim was damaged and bend on the left side. Took out the cell phone to start making calls for help - No signal!! I then decided to go further down the road to a safer spot from where I could phone. Managed onthe flat for about another kilometer before I found a safe spot to phone from.
Phoned the venue of the conference and asked if they could sent someone with a bakkie to fetch me. Thought I could make further plans once I got to the venue and at least had a warm shower and cup of coffee as I was soaked eventhough I was wearing a rainsuit. The people from the venue phoned me back and said to me help was on it's way 8) Things were starting to look better, it even stopped raining and within 10 minutes the sun also started to shine!!
Help arrived, in the form of a fellow Wild Dog member - Bushclown!! He had a bike trailer, we loaded the bike and off we went, obviously chatting about bikes ;D ;D
Bushclown dropped me off at reception, said he will see what he can do. Later the afternoon I received a call from Bushclown, a four pound hammer did the thing and the tyre stayed inflated!! I went for a test run, felt a bit wobbly from 100km/h.
I left the venue this morning at 5, stayed on the N3 for in case... and arrived safely home just before 10, with the tyre still inflated!!
Need to sort the rim out this week, and just wanted to tell the forum, like so many has done before, how unique and special the WD crowd is!!
Bushclown, thank you, I owe you BIG TIME!!! :thumright: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
