Upington to Van Wyksvlei – May, 6th (+/- 298 km)

To my surprise the front tire was still fully inflated! After having the left overs of the “Moerse Hamburger” for breakfast, I took my bike for a service. Needless to say I also got a spare front tube. Since it was still early, I decided to backtrack to Augrabies. About 20 km outside Upington I got that by now familiar feeling. Without even looking, I know the front tire was flat again, so I put in the new tube. Something that I should have done in the first place. So I head back for Upington, get another tube, skip Augrabies and hit the dirt road to Kenhardt. Since it was still early (16:47), I decided to go for Van Wyksvlei. Normally you will do this stretch of 140 odd kilometers in a bit more than an hour. Half an hour later the road become slippery and five minutes later I had to negotiate my first mud pool. The rain of the previous day covered a great part of the interior. Twenty minutes later and I was playing in the mud. Very cautious and with some fancy footwork I took on the rest of the road, the last hour or so in darkness. Just before eight I entered the ghost town of Van Wyksvlei. With droopy eyes I looked at the hotel that is not up and running any more, so I stopped at the first house where there were a sign of life and asked if they know of any place where I can overnight. The guy was more than helpful and before long I was relaxing in a warm bath ( there was no shower). Maybe it was good to soak the dirt for a while. A bit weary of the days encounter, it did not take long before I looked up the comfort of my bed…

Van Wyksvlei to Prins Albert (+/- 405 km)

Well rested I was ready for the new day. I load my stuff and headed for Carnarvon. The road was still moist with wet and slippery patches and water and mud puddles. At least in daylight you can judge the condition of the road beter. As the day went on, the going become easier. At Carnarvon I stopped at the Lemon Tree Coffee Shop for breakfast. With my tummy full, I feel ready to take on whatever the road can dish up. The road to Fraserburg went without any hiccups. I took the Oudekloof pass to Leeu-Gamka. As I take the turnoff from the tar, I hit the first graded patch, so I realized: Jy moet fokus my kind, don’t lose it now. There were some bad patches and damage of the previous years flood and all the river crossings had some water in it. Nice road to ride and the scenery is breathtaking. Soon I found myself in a more familiar surroundings. Near Leeu-Gamka I hit a swarm of grasshoppers. Was I glad that I opted for the full face helmet instead of the motocross with the goggles. After having something to eat at the Shell City, I took on the last stretch for the day to Prins Albert via the dirt road. I booked in at Bushman’s Valley and went into town for a cold one at the Swartberg Hotel. Unfortunately Buks could not made it. I had a chat with few bikers from Cape Town. They asked me if I was married. The one guy reply that he never come across a biker that said that he is not married without a smile on his face. I wonder why? With some mixed feelings I went to bed that night. Glad and thankful that I have made it so far without any major insident, but sad that my journey is almost over…

Prins Albert to George (+/- 135 km)

For the last time I load my stuff on my bike. At this point it is almost second nature. With no rush I went over the Swartberg pass. and have something to eat at Wilgewandel. I took the tar road to Oudtshoorn and from there back on the dirt roads over the Montagu pass to George. For the first time I had a water crossing at the Doring river. So after sixteen days and 4483 k’s on the GPS and 4585,8 k’s on the speedo later, I was back where I have started…

Tip: Stick to a routine when you pack or unpack or put stuff away. It make life much easier.

In conclusion - It does not matter where we ride of how far we ride, it is only by the grease of God that we make it back home alive

You welcome. Yes it is almost a year ago. Not a bad idee to go on a long trip again  ???

Now that is a solo trip. :thumleft:
Nice photo's Baked Beans.

Ai en daars nog 'n lekker ride report klaar.Dankie vir die report en die nice fotos, dit was 'n lekker een gewees :thumleft:

Some technical data:

Only for the stretch between Lutzville and Port Nolloth I needed extra fuel. Normally you can refuel at Koiingnaas or at Kleinsee, so this is not a problem. An other alternative is to go from Groenrivier to Garies to refuel and restock.
