Broken odometer and speedometer

I bought a klr a few months back. The speedometer and odometer broke. I took it to a local mechanic and he removed the broken gear from the front wheel that drives the odometer and speedometer. How much should it cost to get it fixed and how difficult is it to fix myself? My mechanic quoted me somewhere around R4k, which sounds a bit much. BTW, it is a 2006 model.
