Day 8
Destination for the day was to go crash at Edgy’s place in Grahamstown via Baviaans….a first for Cocky and I.
I was a bit nervous because of all the stories that I heard and we were not sure how deep the river crossings would be. It was going to be a long day cause once we got through the Baviaans…it was still around 220kms on tar from Patensie to Edgy’s place.
It rained during the night so together with the cold….we knew we had a long and testing day ahead of us.
Wet main road in Uniondale
Cocky checking the bikes
As soon as we got on the bikes…it pissed down again.
Now look……my pain threshold….can take plenty…but I’m a real moffie…when it comes to cold. And wet on top of that…..nee donner man! I remember when I used to cycle with my Toppie in winter…that my hands…and only my hands…would get so cold that I it will start with needles and pins….then goes completely dead….en dan kots ek.
Ja kots…opgooi…vomit…katskiet….braak…..hurl….whatever!
So I already said on day 2 that I didn’t pack the appropriate clothing in terms of gloves…I had like 3 pairs…but they were all summer gloves and a yellow pair of 4x4 recovery ones…..moerse lekker vir die somer….uiters kak vir nat en koue.
As a matter of fact….you can rather take them of when it is wet…cause once they are wet..they become soggy and that makes it even worse.
Anyhow….so now it is pissing and I’m a real moffie and I can feel this kots stage coming up. So I chase down Cocky and pull him over. I get of my bike…leave it running in neutral and go put my hands behind the purring Akro’s…..hmmmm hmmmmm…..its working….I can feel heat.
With the heat…comes the gasses from the Akro’s…..so sluk sluk….nou gaan jy eers kots.
Cocky is hosing himself…..szien djy my bru….djys kak dom djy…..so he explains to me that both our KTM’s have fans ons each side of the bike with enough space to fit a hand in…..and the warm air from the engine blowing over the fan…works like a charm.
Only problem is….to get the right hand warm….you have to apply throttle….with the cold wet left hand.
Here you can see mee leaning over with the left hand so that Mr Right hand can get some warm blood back into the veins.
With all this homemade heater operation and the pissing rain…..we missed the turnoff to Baviaans and ended up in Willomore….at least it wasn’t raining there so we warmed up a bit. We saw 5 KTM riders going the other way….the right way of course and these were beside one other KTM later...the only bikes we saw for the day on the gravel.
Some nice roads on the way to Willomore.....
Back the way we came and this time we saw the sign.
We only had one puncture for the entire trip….and this is where we had it…right at the foot of Baviaans.
The rain stopped but it was still cold. Once again I laughed so much with all that belter coming from Cockster while we changed the tube.
The weather was much better now and we started to enjoy the scenery and the riding. Rachel from Swanze Gat guest house made us some awesome samies so we picked a nice spot and stopped for a break.
Bleddie useless surgical glove....he he
Entering the actual park
For the first part we didn’t encounter any cars or 4x4’s but they started to appear. The river crossings were fun and not too deep. At this stage…the water was crystal clear so you could easily pick a line to avoid loose rocks.
Enigste ander bike wat ons in die Baviaans gekry het....check hoe ywerig "groet" ons mekaar...he he...soort soek soort.....maar laat dit nou 'n Block of Flats was......tot my linker voet waai ook!! :imaposer:
This next couple of pictures tells the story by itself almost….
Get to the gate…
Cocky stop to open…..
I go through and before I get off to go and close the gate behind Cocky..…this makmoer comes through in his bakkie…check his numberplate cause he is a regte egte DWIS………..
And he just drives straight through……….Cocky just sitting there in despair…..he he…I was also de moer in but it was funny in a way….I wished that he would get stuck somewhere and rot!!
On top.....we stopped here and when we left again.....Cocky locked his bike keys in his topbox....some home made mechanism.....he he...I didn't know so off I went.....but nothing that Mr Mcguyver cannot do with a Leatherman. Soon he caught up with me again.
Soon…it was a repeat of The Hell. I counted over 40 vehicles from around halfway out of the Bavaains…..and that was only from the front. Chaos……again…and I could see Cocky was fuming in his helmet…..he he….I chuckled at him a couple of times inside my helmet.
Here was the longest stretch of water....there were two actually...and we got stuck between the two of them and a couple of 4x4's.......
People very friendly though....
This poephol....almost couldn't get past with his whole house that he was towing behind him....like we said earlier.....you stay away from awesome places like this....over Easter or other popular holiday times........
Moerse mooi paaie.....
Just before 17:00 we got to Patensie, filled up and gave it stick on the tar. We lost almost two hours with our Willomore detour so that first part from Hankey with a couple of winding and twisty roads went past way too quickly……but it was awesome. The roads were pretty quiet by now so we had most of the road to ourselves and we gooied lekker groot vet mielies!!
Some douchbag almost ran Cocky of the highway when he suddenly switched lanes on the highway but we made it to Grahamstown just before dark.
Edgy showed us our rooms but we had a couple of beers first on his deck with a spectacular view.
Krim (HVDM) and his girlfriend were also staying there for the night and Edgy arranged for Big Dom and Throttle Jockey to join us as well.
We sat around the table eating, drinking, laughing and of course the usual banter between KTM and BMW took place as well. Throttle Jockey trying to convince Cocky of the capabilities of his 800GS…..but I believe he is the proud owner now also of a 950SE….well done my boy!!
Edgy and his wife put up and awesome braai with salads and the whole nine yards. Many thanks for your hospitality and getting some local Dawgs to come and join us.
We were lekker moeg so we said goodnight and called it a day.
Cocky thought for a moment that this was his bed for the night…brannas het nie brieke nie….he he!
Tomorrow we would go visit the crazy GlenInk!!
