Last night a friend and I got talking about communication in remote areas in cace of an emergency and how bad cell phone reception can be, even in a city.

This led to a discussion that it just may be better to take an old GSM phone with you into the bush or other remote areas than a modern day smart phone. Why? The battery last so much longer and it seems that GSM /GPRS signals are far better than 3G etc. Whilst smart phones do have the ability to operate on GSM and the such, I have often found that if 3G is not availible I cannot make a connection or send or recieve text messages.

Yes there are PLB's for emergencies but not everyone has one, so is it better to have an older generation phone ? Anyone have any views or knowledge with this?

And i dont want one of these type of things on my bike: https://www.myamplifiers.com/umts-repeater-umts-booster.html
