DIY Service of 1200 GS

Hi Guys

I would like some advice from the guys who service their own 1200 GS's.

Up until now I had the bike serviced at the agents.  Are there any tips that you can offer such as the type of parts you prefer, where to buy it from and where do you generally have you bikes serviced?

Please remember I'm in Cape Town Area.
