It is 4 day trip and a bit longer ride / drive from KZN (but I can suggest some juicy ways to get to Katse from that side) - on the other hand it is closer for the Gauteng guys.

And of course tour with Losper is highly recommended.  :thumleft:

Yes this is on the to-ride list. I have ridden all these legs before on the 250 or 690, except for    "Day 3: Semonkong to Thaba Tseka via Mantsonyane shortcut". when we were planning to do this we were going the other way around and arrived at the river crossing just before dark. One of our guys was on a 640 and he refused to try the hill climb across the river. We ended up turning around and heading to Melealea. We got to the lodge at 10pm. After a day at the lodge we moved on to Semonkong and then attempted the Mantonyane shortcut from Semonkong. Eish same problem. Been wanting to go back ever since. It will be cool to do this on the 500.

Excellent report and trip; as always I am envious.

In ages past I did the same ride (on a KTM 520 would you believe) with some "hardcore enduro riders"; said for a laugh and we went down Bushman's Nek to the SAPS border post where we saw out a hailstorm, and they were quite friendly. Endured another hailstorm on the way back to St Bernards.  The pass was quite tricky in places (steep with deep ruts) and there was one Husaberg drowning in the river before the police post. We had a "scout" on a KTM 200 and recce'd another pass down to some plantations that looked viable. May have been the infamous Porritt place but who knows.

I have seen that "pass" that goes down into the plantations and have wanted to try it for quite a while now.

I think it does go onto Gary Porritt's farm, must say I would have no problem about riding across that piece of ***** property with no permission. Bit hard to get it with him languishing in Joburg prison 

I still want to try a Rhino peak ride before the end of the year if you keen?

I would recommend to do the whole traverse, not just Rhino from Sani pass. Yes, the climb around waterfall is gnarly, but getting up the Rhino ridge coming from Sani pass is also not walk in the park. This way you get it all - traverse as well as Rhino peak  :thumleft:
