I'm not 100% certain, but I believe that that river will be feeding the dam, and once completed the water level will rise very significantly, hence the reason for the new, very high bridge.

I did hear about another new dam being planned, probably similar to Katse.

Mr Zog, tell me, why is Katse so protected? no one is allowed on teh water or near it, completely fenced off, would be a great dam for water sports

I'm not too sure Mikie.

It is the main water supply for millions of people...

They farm trout on it...

I have been the medic on an adventure race where guys paddled canoes on it (in about 2006)

I know the water is moerofa cold, and its also moerofa deep...

Thought you might know. I was just surprised at the lack of any kind of boat being allowed on the water in general, I guess pollution is a reason

You are right on the pollution. We visited the dam wall last year and attended the presentation. We asked the same question and they confirmed that the risk of contamination from a boat's engine is too big. The only boats you will see on the dam belongs to Katse themselves.

I was keen to go to the wall but we were told that can only go there with the official tours

Quickly slapped a video of the Sani climb together

Nah the diggers are only fixing the road, I suspect trenching along the sides to lay down those stone cage walls, its a very easy pass, the switchbacks at the top can get trickier specially when you have to contend with oncoming taxis as you saw

The road looks good now to what it used to look like:

Yes that is correct, the new dam, called Mashai dam, will be build just south of Taung and the water level will rise at the bridge. The road will also be tarred initially from Thaba Theka  over the bridge to the dam and then in the distant future all the way over Matebeng pass to the south of Lesotho joining the tar road at Qacha.

Lesotho Highlands water project.
Phase 1:  Mohale and Katse dam (185m high)
Phase 2: Mashai dam (155m high ) just south of Taung on the way to Sehonghong
Phase 3: Tsoelike dam (158m high ) near Qacha
Phase 4: Ntoahae dam (120m high )
Phase 5: Malatsi dam (120m high )
There was also talk of a dam just west of Mokhotlong, it is such a big project that the plans seems to change from time to time.
One fact is for sure, many many many graval roads are gonna be tarred in the future to service al these dams.

Wow, thanks for the info.
What happens to villages that are flooded by the dams? Are those people relocated and given other land??

Yip they are relocated and compensated but it takes years and years.
There are also environmental studies done, etc, it is one HUGE project.
