So Fugly and wife decided to go to the Katberg Hotel for a holiday over New Year. As Mrs Fugly doesnâ??t like the bike much and neither me having a pillion on the KLR, she took the cage and all the kit.
With Fugly fully loaded with tools, tubes, air bombs and the rest I set off with my 2l water at 9:30am and headed for the old road to the closed McKay Bridge over the Sundays River.

Of course whist on the bridge, Fugly could not help but notice the lovely view

Sweet 16!

After a few close-ups, I was off again looking for all of the gravel that I could find on the way to Paterson (not too much, bloody GPS kept sending me into private farmlands!) but I did manage to find some scenery.

After an uneventful trip from Paterson to Alicedale, I came across 2 other riders (not Dogs), 1 of whom nearly decapitated himself on power lines hanging over the road. He only managed to stop the bike when his mirror hit the 1st of the cables. Fortunately these were being repaired and were not live but the idiots doing the work had no warning signs up. (personally I thought the rider was a bit blind, I saw them from a mile away.) His skid marks bore testimony! It was a poepal knyp moment for him!

We then all entered the Burchell Game Reserve which happens to have a regional road running through it and once again one of the riders could have copped it after a â??stretchyâ? came loose from his topbox, fortunately it didnâ??t go through his chain and was simply re secured.

I then played around and took a few photos whilst they were riding.

After a lovely ride through the reserve, we said our goodbyes when we got to Riebeek East.

The town has a beautiful old church.

After some water, I was off again towards Bedford. I didnâ??t pass a single vehicle on the gravel on the way there.

There is a 1st World War memorial in the middle of Bedford.

I was then off to Adelaide and then to Balfour via the Post Retief Conservancy.

By now I was pretty much nackered and didnâ??t take too many more photos as I was trying my best to avoid the mud monsters on the other side of the mountain. Finally I reached my destination at 4:30pmâ?¦. Katberg and cold beer!

I was down and out for the next few days as I got bronchitis from the heat and the wet cotton shirt which I had under my DMD armor and was only able to ride again a few days later. These next pics are taken on the R351 north of the hotel. Enjoy!

Man I need to do that ride again!

What an amazing ride.  :)
We did that ride from the Queenstown side when we attended the Up The Mountain Rally.  8)

Recognised the road as it was stepped in one section similar to the Baviaans.

Awesome ride and stunning scenery

You should consider getting a few of these vests for riding https://www.capestorm.co.za/products/detail/41?cat=16&activity=30

When it is very hot I wear just that under my jacket works great in summer and in winter and really improves comfort

You didn't come for a beer?  ::)

There's another up the mountain rally in Feb, roundabout the 6th.

Julle praat seker van die Bobbejaans Rally daardie naweek te Queenstown...  En ek is besig om 'n plan aan mekaar te slaan en kook  :pot:  om daardie naweek te gaan.  Wie gaan dalk ook soon toe?

Great trip Fugly! And very nice piccies as well!  :thumleft:

Same thing happened to me when I returned to PTA from sunnier climates recently. Must have been caused by all the f@rkin rain up here :'(

Lekker report and photos :thumleft:
