Garmin Quest Freezing up

I use my Garmin Quest in the cage as well as on the Dakar, while using the device in the cage it works 100%. Using the device on the Dakar causes it to freeze periodically then you have to reset the GPS by pressing the in and power buttons this happens when used on battery power only and when used with the standard 12v sigaret lighter charger it would just reset and freeze within a few minutes making the device unusable 

Has anybody experienced something similar?

BTW. I even installed a power connection running directly from the battery
